Anthropic's Claude now allows users to connect financial accounts for insights into spending and balances.
New Personal Finance Feature Launched
Anthropic has recently unveiled its new Personal Finance functionality within Claude. This feature enables users to link their bank accounts through Plaid, offering them the ability to inquire about their expenditure, current balances, and upcoming bills. As of now, this feature operates on a read-only basis, which means Claude does not have the authority to transfer, manage, or invest any funds on behalf of the users.
Access and Eligibility
The beta version of Personal Finance is gradually being released across the United States for users subscribed to Pro, Max, and Ultra plans. However, it's important to note that Free, Team, and Enterprise accounts do not have access to this feature. The functionality is available on multiple platforms, including web browsers, Claude Desktop applications, as well as iOS and Android devices.
Utilizing Personal Finance for Insights
With this new feature, users can engage with Claude to analyze their financial habits. They can ask questions such as:
- Where did my money go this month?
- How does my spending compare to previous months?
- Are there any duplicate charges or unexpected fees?
Moreover, Claude can break down various financial terms and perform key calculations, like showing interest accrued over time.
Visualizing Your Finances
Claude also enhances the user experience by generating visual aids. Users can access spending charts, calendars of upcoming payments, and customizable dashboards to better understand their financial landscape. The platform facilitates follow-up questions, helping users refine their queries to focus on remaining balances before payday.
Secure and Private Data Handling
To connect their accounts, users simply need to log into their bank via Plaid. It’s worth noting that Claude never requests or views the bank password; users have full control over which accounts they share. The information accessible to Claude includes bank names, account types, last digits, balances, credit limits, and transaction histories spanning up to two years.
Anthropic assures users that conversations within the Personal Finance hub are not utilized to enhance its models. Moreover, the information shared outside of this secured space adheres to typical privacy settings. Chats related to linked accounts are designed to remain excluded from Claude's memory and are not included in future search queries.
Unlinking Accounts and Data Retention
If users decide to unlink a bank account, future access will be revoked. However, any information previously incorporated into chats or produced content will remain until manually deleted. Thus, users should be cautious when sharing conversations, as they may disclose sensitive financial figures.
Important Considerations
The Help Center has provided several reminders regarding the utility of Personal Finance. For example, balances may reflect a delay of one or two days, and it is possible that some accounts may be unavailable, resulting in incomplete spending summaries. To ensure accuracy, users are encouraged to verify important figures against their bank statements or through the bank's official application.
It's essential to highlight that Personal Finance is primarily intended for gaining insights rather than providing investment advice. As the rollout of this feature progresses, eligible users can access Personal Finance via Claude’s side menu and link their bank accounts through Plaid. Currently, only banking institutions based in the United States are supported.
