Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasizes commitments to living costs, job security, and support across life stages at a recent party conference.
SINGAPORE – During a recent party conference held at the Singapore Expo, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong outlined essential priorities for the government that include addressing cost-of-living challenges, securing better job opportunities, and providing support for citizens from education through retirement.
A Comprehensive Agenda
On October 25, PM Wong spoke before an audience of around 3,000 party activists, assuring them that the government has a full agenda for this term. “There is much more to come,” he emphasized as he discussed the government's commitment to enhancing the lives of Singaporeans.
The prime minister also recognized the importance of supporting individuals facing life setbacks, addressing concerns raised by citizens about the need for assistance beyond families with children. He expressed, “People asked: what about those without children? What about singles? What about seniors?” assuring his audience, “We have not forgotten anyone.”
Listening to Citizens
Wong reminded attendees that the strong mandate received from voters—65.57% in the recent General Election—comes with immense responsibility. He stressed that it’s crucial to deliver on promises and tackle the challenges the nation faces.
He also highlighted Singapore’s unique position in a challenging global landscape, noting the city-state’s reputation as a trustworthy partner for businesses and investors. Speaking to the economic climate, he shared insights from recent meetings with CEOs of major semiconductor companies and representatives from global technology startups, underscoring the interest in expanding operations within Singapore.
Addressing Job Market Disparities
Despite positive economic indicators, PM Wong acknowledged that not all sectors are thriving equally. He noted that while Singapore’s economy saw a growth rate of 5.4% in the third quarter of 2026, there was an increase in retrenchments, with 4,620 layoffs reported in the second quarter of that year—the highest since the pandemic.
“Some employees are seeing new opportunities, while others are struggling to adapt,” PM Wong remarked, pointing out the struggles of lower-wage workers and older individuals re-entering the job market. “Our task is to ensure that economic growth benefits every Singaporean,” he stated.
Real-Life Examples of Support
Wong shared the story of Fajar Shah Salim, a 45-year-old father who lost his job as a restaurant manager. With family responsibilities weighing heavily on him, Fajar faced uncertainty about his future. He utilized the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support Scheme, receiving approximately $2,800 while he retrained. Through determination and effort, he transitioned to a career as an IT operations specialist.
“Fajar’s experience exemplifies how government support combined with individual effort can lead to success,” PM Wong said. He reiterated that while the government will create opportunities and provide assistance, workers must also be willing to learn and adapt.
Building a Collaborative Future
PM Wong emphasized that parents should allow their children to grow at their own pace as the government reduces its focus on examinations and expands educational pathways. He called on all Singaporeans to look out for one another, forging a spirit of community.
“Government, businesses, unions, workers, families, and the community—everyone has a pivotal role to play,” he concluded. “The vision of a better Singapore cannot solely be delivered by the government. It must be built together with the people.” In this partnership, he expressed his hope that a collaborative approach would help to achieve a brighter future for all.
