Small Businesses Hopeful for the Holidays, Retention Remains a Challenge

While small businesses are optimistic about the holiday season, customer retention strategies are lacking.

Optimism Amidst Inflation

The holiday shopping season is fast approaching, and despite economic pressures from inflation, small businesses are maintaining a positive outlook. A recent survey conducted by Constant Contact has revealed that a significant 77% of small business owners worldwide believe they will achieve their holiday revenue targets for 2026, with this figure increasing to 81% among U.S. businesses.

This encouraging sentiment comes from a comprehensive study involving over 4,000 small business owners and consumers from countries including the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It appears that small business owners are feeling confident even with rising prices being the primary concern for many shoppers.

Consumer Preferences Favor Small Businesses

As consumers become more inclined to support local businesses, the data shows a noticeable shift in shopping habits. Approximately 20% of respondents indicated they plan to spend more at small businesses this holiday season, nearly double the 11% who expressed similar intentions last year.

Moreover, 75% of consumers reported they are likely to shop at an unfamiliar small business, presenting a vast opportunity for customer acquisition for these enterprises. However, it is not all about goodwill—shoppers still expect value for their money. Around 53% stated that discounts and sales would motivate them to choose small businesses over larger retailers, while 44% highlighted the importance of conveniences like free shipping and easy returns.

The Balancing Act of Shopping Needs

Consumers also seek unique gift options and an enjoyable shopping experience. Nearly 49% are drawn to original and unusual gifts, while 43% value the atmosphere of local boutiques. The challenge for small businesses lies in meeting these diverse shopper demands, striving to blend the personal touch of local stores with the competitive pricing and convenience often offered by larger chains like Amazon.

Embracing AI This Holiday Season

In a bid to enhance their operations, many small businesses are turning to artificial intelligence. The survey found that 68% plan to integrate AI tools into their strategies for the holiday season, with 53% expecting to utilize these technologies more than in previous years.

Common applications of AI for these businesses include creating marketing content (34%), generating product images (32%), and forecasting inventory needs (30.9%). Interestingly, consumers are generally accepting of AI-generated marketing, with 56% expressing comfort in seeing AI's involvement in small business advertising.

The Customer Retention Dilemma

While enthusiasm about acquiring new customers is evident, a key insight from the survey reveals a disconnect in retention strategies. Although 75% of consumers are open to exploring new small businesses, over 70% of these businesses do not plan to actively encourage holiday shoppers to subscribe to email lists or loyalty programs.

The lack of proactive retention strategies highlights a crucial area that small businesses need to address. Fostering customer loyalty could be the key to not only attract but also to keep holiday shoppers engaged after the season ends.
